Hello.
I am English, and recently came across the wonderful singing of Lata Mangashkar.
Skimming the internet, I found a reference to her as being the 'non-threatening voice of Indian women's singing' (or similar), in an article which seemed to argue that the tone and delivery of her voice made it acceptable to the generality of Indian chauvinism!
Is this a general feeling in the Indian Feminist movement, or is it the usual drivel you often find as a 'criticism' of women's liberation?
As an English speaker, I am not well attuned to the subtleties of Indian voices, particularly when it comes to singing.
I would be grateful for your comments, and pointers in this direction.
(I'm an elderly Englishman, with a lifelong love of folk music, and a dedication to feminism).
Thanks.
Allen.
