I don't know if many of you know about this, but I just needed to put this out there. I am a brown girl who lives in northern India (Panchkula, to be exact). Right now, the situation in the Panchkula-Haryana region is EXTREMELY tense, because of this spiritual leader, baba Ram Rahim and a case of sexual exploitation against him.
A little back story, this guy is a HUGE religious/spiritual leader over here. His website says he has over 60 million faithful followers, so you can guess how big.
So this case, it was filed by one of his followers back in 2002. She wrote a letter to the then Prime Minister of India, about how she was sexual exploited along with 35-40 other women by the baba. I won't give the whole story here (it would take days, lmao) but the long and the short is that 18 women followers were called for questioning out of which 2 said that they had been sexually exploited by him. One of them said that her rape was justified by how it was going to 'purify' her. Many of them agreed that they had been threatened with how powerful he is and the political grasps he has.
The case started in 2007 in court, and later the baba was also accused of murder of two.
Anyway, after a decade, the final verdict of the court will be declared tomorrow (Friday, 25th August) in the Panchkula court and the city is FLOODED with his followers. All schools and colleges have been shut down, as a lot of violence and destruction is expected after the verdict comes out. Already there are a 100 thousand of his followers literally sleeping on roads and parks for DAYS, and the entire region is on high alert. So much more police has been employed, and even the army has gotten involved.
I am so disappointed in all his followers. They are literally here to support a man (who was, btw, free all this time after 2007 making movies, etc) who has raped at least 2 women, and perhaps committed murder. They are planing to destroy public places and riot this 'spiritual leader', why? Because he's you leader? Is this even a religious following? Because it really just seems like a cult.
Anyway, I've probably written way too much. I just hope the verdict tomorrow proves him guilty.
